Willie Minoga, described as the ‘freight train’ by commentators calling the SP PNG Hunters games this year has been nominated for this year’s Intrust Super Cup Peoples Choice Award.
Hunters CEO Brad Tassell said that they had several options but opted for Minoga as other players were in the running for other awards. All Intrust Super Cup teams were asked to nominate a key player for the award with voting starting on Sunday, August 24, 2014. Progressive voting tallies will be kept under wraps, with the winner of the People's Choice Award to be unveiled at the QRL Gala Dinner at Brisbane City Hall on Wednesday, September 10. “This is the ideal opportunity for the many Hunters fans to get behind Willie (Minoga) so that we can have as many of our players in the running to win the categories available,” Tassell said. “At the moment Israel Eliab is highly in contention for the prestigious Player of The Year award. Barring any exceptional performances this weekend Garry Lo looks to have wrapped up the Top Try Scorer award and would certainly be high on the list for Rookie of the Year voting. We have the biggest fan base of any team in the Intrust Super Cup so we ask for all of our supporters to get online and vote for Willie for the Peoples Choice Award. Both he and Garry Lo have definitely been fan favourites this year.” The SP Hunters are on bye this weekend, Round 26 so will await the results of the two games involving Ipswich Jets and Tweed Heads – who are playing different teams. Both teams sit above the sixth-placed Hunters, who are on 31 points but are guaranteed two points from the bye so a top five spot depends on this weekend’s results. Other categories are decided by the referees and other panellists but the Peoples Choice Award is determined by the general public through their votes. Northern Pride’s Hezron Murgha was the inaugural recipient of the award last year. Voting closes at midnight on Sunday, September 7. Multiple entries submitted by the same person will not be accepted. A lucky fan selected from a random draw will win two tickets and a food and drinks package valued at $150 to the September 28 Intrust Super Cup grand final at Suncorp Stadium. The Sinisine Youngomul Brothers of Simbu, Chimbu province beat the Bumbu Barbarians of Lae in extra time to win the 2014 Ipatas Cup by 14 - 13 in extra time. It was seen as a gritty, tough and energy charged grand final with the Brothers comming out on top from a golden point field goal to clinch the victory. The Ipatas Cup Simbu and Eastern Highlands Challenge are now set for February 28 to March 2 at the Lae Rugby League ground.
Ipatas Cup CEO Timothy Lepa said both challenges were deferred due to teams not complying with the full requirements. The Coca-Cola Amatil Ltd sponsored event has been moved from their respective locations in Simbu and Goroka due to spectator violence to a neutral zone in Lae city where crowd control is better. Lepa said the CCIC Board has also appointed two new coordinators for Simbu, Nickson Diunde and Eastern Highlands’ Michael Gomia to take charge of the event. The coordinators confirmed that the following teams have met all requirements and they are ready to participate in the Simbu and Eastern Highlands Challenges respectively. In the EHD Challenge GDH Brumbies, Emo Brothers, Noweks Royals and Unitech Spartans from Lae who missed out on the Northern leg were included by the CCIC management. For the Simbu challenge, Zicks Brothers, Sine Yongo Brothers, Kunaba Stones, TNA Angras, Jaka Elimbare Miners and Suai United are taking part. Meanwhile, the CCIC Western Highlands Challenge will be staged this weekend at the Rebiamul Oval in Mount Hagen. In pool A are Kum Tigers, City Settlers, Haco Spiders and Kui Raiders. Pool B Dei Kuris, Mul Norths, Togoba Magani and Baiyer Roosters. The two winners in each pool qualify for the finals and will a win Gold Pass to Lae in late March. THE Port Moresby Suburban Sports Association has announced its rugby league team to take part in the Southern-leg of the Ipatas Cup rugby league competition.
When releasing his squad, POMSUSA president Billy Aki said the players were selected from the Port Moresby Suburban Rugby League competition. Coach is Yanga Harupa, trainer is Billy Soeve, and team manager is Namba Kil. He said training would start tomorrow at the Kone Tigers Oval club at 4pm. The National THE K200,000 Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup (CCIC) challenge opens up with the Northern leg with 12 clubs from Morobe, Madang and the Eastern Highlands Provinces doing battle on January 24-26.
The challenge, recently recognised by the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) has again drawn the best from the four regions of the country. CCIC chief executive officer Timothy Lepa (pictured) yesterday said the hype is on again for this nationwide tournament that not only brings out the best from the rural leagues but serves to unearth new unknown talent. Lepa further confirmed that as a bonus the competition will receive support from the PNGRFL through referee and coaching clinics as well. “The Northern Challenge has again drawn huge interest and the co-ordinators have had to deny some clubs for not fulfilling the criteria set,” Lepa said. Northern Challenge co-ordinator Mona Tonsy Clyde envisages a tough opening bout with this year’s Lae rugby league premiers East Taraka Spiders the pre-post favourite to claim the Gold Pass and K20,000 reward to enter the play-offs stage. The other confirmed teams from Morobe are Bumbu Barbarians, Kamkumu Crushers, Beyond Dogs, Three-Mile Brothers, Jaka Knights, Armsec Bulolo Miners and Ramu Hauslain Cowboys. From Madang is Madang Easts, while from the Eastern Highlands are Ok1 Titans of Yonki, Kainantu Crusaders, and Lufa Warriors. Lepa further confirmed that the Eastern Highlands challenge will follow on February 1-2 also at the Lae Rugby League Oval, due to issues that were brought up during last year’s challenge staged in Goroka. He said in the Southern Zone challenge from February 7-9, Popondetta will join that leg in what will be a split competition. “One pool will be played at the Sir William Skate Oval at Kaugere and the other at a location yet to be confirmed in the Central Province,” he said. “This is so that we are doing our part to promote the game at the rural level as much as possible,” Lepa added. He said the Western Highlands challenge has only two clubs at this stage who have full-filled the criteria. This leg will be played on February 14-16. Lepa said the Southern Highlands leg will for the first time be staged in Tari due to the high interest there. “Reigning champions Mendi Off-Cuts have again registered to play as well in that leg,” he added. Both the Southern Highlands and Enga Province legs will be played from February 23-25. The Enga leg will be hosted by Banz Rugby League. From February 28 to March 2, the Simbu challenge will get underway in Lae and Jiwaka challenge in Banz simultaneously. The last leg will be the New Guinea Islands where it will be joined by Vanimo and Wewak. This will be played in Kimbe from March 7-9. All winners that finish on top in their respective pools will receive the mandatory Gold Pass and K20,000 prize-money to enter the play-offs that start on March 14-16. Lepa said as per normal all teams that receive Gold Passes will have all their transport, accommodation and meals covered by the CCIC. The teams are Kui Raiders, Kala Warriors, Mul Norths, Pacific Raiders, Haco Spiders, City Settlers, Dei Hunters, Nebilyer Settlers, Togoba Magani and Keram Coffee. Western Highlands CCIC director John Parciegan said these teams had shown interest to trial for qualification into the expanded competition. Parciegan said other teams who want to participate must inform him so they can be included. He said that the games will be played at the Queens Park over the weekends. “This is not the final (list), I believe we still have more teams to join.” He said the competition has been staged in the province for some time now so the interest was high and they were expecting more teams to come forward. Parciegan said the deadline for club affiliation throughout the country will be on Saturday. He said that and player registration will close on January 17. “If you have any quiries or frustration I would ask you to come forward and explain to my men on the ground so that it can be sorted out.” He can be contacted on 71412860 for any clarifications or issues related to the competition. The National Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Coca Cola Ipatas Cup (CCIC) Timothy Lepa has commended Papua New Guinea Rugby League Board Chairman Don Fox for his commitment and efforts put into the development of rugby league in the country.
Lepa said this after Fox made his intentions known to resign at the end of 2013 at the PNGRFL’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Lae over the weekend. Deputy Chairman Sandis Tsaka was appointed by the PNGRFL’s board to succeed from Mr Fox. Lepa says Fox has been there through the darkest times of Rugby League when the Digicel Cup started and has contributed immensely to the promotion of the code and the development of players in the country. “Tsaka is a reputable person and I would like to congratulate him on his appointment. I believe he will continue on from where Fox has left,’’ Lepa added that there are some outstanding issues with Rugby League in the country that needs to be addressed. “Tsaka was vocal for the highlands block over corrupt practices in the rugby league fraternity in PNG over the years. And I hope he would do the same for the nation with this position he’s in now” says Lepa. Lepa who has been spearheading the CCIC competition for the last 14years said ruby league has been gone to the dogs with some running it as a private entity. “I’d like Tsaka to pursue the matter of PNG NRL Bid, Team Kumul and others operating as private entities and resolute them so that we can have one PNGRFL board looking after all aspects of rugby development in PNG,”. “Millions of kina have been pumped into these entities to develop rugby league but it seems that the administrators and coaching staffs (of these entities) are getting the bigger pieces of the cake,” said Lepa. Among others, we need to review the contracts signed by the coaching and administration staffs (nationals). |
