PORT Moresby Rugby Football League’s 2014 season is under a cloud.
The annual general meeting has been deferred four times. With the deferrals the POMRFL board will invite PNG Rugby Football League to mediate on issue as it is a breach of its constitution. The deferral was non-compliance of the constitutional requirements as well as lack of quorum. All the affiliates present were assured that the season would be on schedule as the Murray Barracks oval had been secured for the competition. An absolute majority was passed a motion that the 16 clubs must submit their 2013 operations and financial reports as well as the K500 affiliation fee before the next sitting. Clubs in breach will be required to explain why they should not be excluded from the 2014 season. ON January 19 2007, The National featured an article titled “PNG crocodiles are disappearing”.
The title seems may seem like an environmental issue and the following sentences also agree. Only until nearing the end, however, one would piece it together. It is not animals we are talking about but the race of people that are associated to it in terms of Sports like Rugby League. The feature lamented the lack of representative players from Gulf origin and mentioned names like (former Kumuls) Kavora Posu, Eka Fae, Mahuru Paul Tore, Jack Metta, Sukope Iko, James Miviri, Kaiva Kako, Farapo Malala, Kepi Saea, Roy Heni, Bobby Ako, Clement Mou, half croc Mark Mom, Tuksy Karu and the Kouoru brothers Gideon, Haoda and Joshua. What happened after Kouoru Brothers and Tuksy Karu? Well after long wait, Lawrence Tu’u happened. The young Moveave and Uritai in Gulf Province and Hula in Central province lad came in when we thought the crocs had not hatched any eggs. The nephew of former West players Alu Poka, the lad after completing grade 12 in 2010 at Kilakila Secondary School in Kaugere, Port Moresby, put his whole life into sports playing the hooker and backrow for Digicel Cup team, Gulf Isapea. His determination paid off and the long wait was gone when he got a selection into the Q-Cup squad. Obviously spectators miss the flair and the loftiness of the boys from Gulf. The eldest of three siblings, Tu’u (pictured) said he was privileged and inspired by former Kumuls in the likes of Mark Mom, Alu Poka, Nigel Hukula and Tuksy Karu. His former teammate at Toks Mix Dogs and Wests, Brandy Peter is also part of the Q-Cup squad. Both came through the same ranks until Brandy pulled back due to academic reasons but finally met up at the Q-Cup level. Tu’u built like Alu Poka in his heydays said being part of the team was training him to perform above expectations. He is looking forward to his stint at representative level but said he wanted to find his feet after footy, which is going back to school. THOUSANDS of people at Ialibu in the Southern Highlands turned up at Walume to see three Kumul stars that came to witness the finals between two local teams.
Larsen Marabe, Wellington Albert (pictured) and David Loko accompanied Mendi Town lord mayor Vincent Manda and Mendi town manager Steven Temo. The Imbongu rugby league sponsored by Mendi town manager Steven Temo saw Gateway Bulldogs and Dragons locking horns to contest the Temo’s Cup and man of the match Marabe’s trophy on December 21. Sponsor Temo said he was once a youth who had involved himself in many illegal activities and then shifted his focus to the local rugby league competition. He said he know many youths had the desire to venture into sporting activities such as rugby league and show their hidden talents but sponsors and funding were some of the constraints that hindered them. “I am not a businessman but an ordinary public servant and I have heart for the youths who are struggling to make their way through sporting activities,” he said. He said many of the youths are involving themselves in illegal activities because there is no support from their elected leaders and business houses. He said staying in the villages or town (Mendi) doing nothing forced the youth to be restless and many resorted to involving themselves in drinking homebrew and committing other petty crimes. “We need to cooperate and organise sporting activities to keep the youths busy and we would see drop in the law and order problems the province is experiencing,” he said. He said he is happy to see the three Southern Highlands stars with them as they can be used as role models. Mendi Town lord mayor Vincent Manda said he would stand by Temo’s side to support local leagues in the Imbongu district. “Youths are the backbone of this country and it is everyone’s business to help them achieve their dreams either in sports or other areas they are gifted in. He said rugby league is now a big sport in the country and many Southern Highlanders have the potential to develop into emerging stars such as 20-year-old Wellington Albert, who recently signed a two-year contract with Australian National Rugby League club Penrith Panthers. He said he would support every other sporting activities and urged MPs and business houses to step in and support. The National VIOLENCE reared its ugly head once again in rugby league this time in the popular National Capital District Governor’s Cup yesterday.
The incident happened when Erima Wanderers supporters frustrated over a decision by Port Moresby Rugby League referee Gerry Kaiuk assaulted, then chased him and the Six-Mile Tigers players. The preliminary final match at Kone Tigers oval will now be re-played today at the same venue. The incident stemmed from a shoulder charge by Six Mile Tigers player Stanley Ole on a Wanderers opponent. Referee Kaiuk penalised Ole for the illegal tackle and awarded a penalty to Wanderers, which Ole continuously challenged. That angered the Wanderers supporters who invaded the field and chased Ole and his Tigers team-mates. Unfortunately for Kaiuk he was assaulted in the process and ended up with a swollen forehead. There were three minutes remaining on the clock in the first extra time of 10 minutes when the score was locked at 12-12 after regulation time. The invasion by the Wanderers supporters has received the ire of NCD Suburban Sports Association chairman Billy Aki said he had no choice but to organise police presence for today’s re-match and also for the grand final on Sunday. Aki said the club will be penalised and its future participation in the competition and the Easter Cup next year has been jeopardised. Aki has warned that police will not hesitate to arrest rowdy fans and trouble makers in this rematch and the grand finals. On Christmas Day, Wednesday , Hohola Freeway Bumpers bundled out rival contenders NCD Suburban Ducks 12-10 in the semi-final and then knocked out Hohola Two 4-0 in the preliminary final. They qualified for the grandfinal to await the winner of today’s re-match. In the other Group one result Erima Wanderers edged out Dust Turf 4-0 in a rematch after they failed to score in extra time on Wednesday while Six-Mile Tigers beat Badili Warako 8-0. On Sunday the grand final for the Bowl prize Ensisi Carpets meet Country Cowboys while in the Plate decider Dep Eels faces Hohola 6 Knights. The cash prize on offer for the Cup is K8,000, runners-up K5,000, Plate winner K3000, runners-up K2,000, Bowl winner K1,500 and runners-up K1,000. Meanwhile, Morata Swans are holding a fund-raising dance at Sports Inn today. The national NATIONAL Capital District Suburban Ducks Mackenzie Buka steered his team to a narrow 14-12 win over a determined DEP Eels in NCD Governor’s Christmas Cup at Ipi Park, Hohola yesterday.
But the biggest upset of the weekend was Six Mile Tigers bundling defending champion Morata Swans out of the race with a narrow but decisive 4-0 victory in the pool match on Saturday. Yesterday the Ducks’ strong comeback was ignited by Buka in the second stanza when they were trailing Eels 8-0 at interval. Eels outclassed them in the opening half with solid performance from the forwards and backline. But they just could not put them away, allowing the Ducks to get home. Ducks CEO Billy Aki was angered by his teams’ paltry performance in the first half told them at halftime to pull themselves together and they did. The Ducks would have to lift their game for the Christmas Day clash against Freeway Bumpers, who are have proved to be a more formidable outfit. At Kone Tigers oval 6 Mile Tigers qualified for the semi finals after beating 9 Mile Giants 16-12. Tigers upset Morata Swans 4-0 in the pool match which set the scene for their elimination. Rainbow Backpage put them to the sword with a 4-0 upset. The Cup semi finals will be between Erima Wanderers and Dust Turf while Badili Warako takes on 6 Mile Tigers on Wednesday. In the Group two Cup quarter finals Hohola Two edged out Kaugere Pythons 7-6 in a thriller, which was decided by an early field goal in the second half. At half-time the scores were locked 6-6. In the other games, 8 Mile Green 10 Junction Dogs 6, Freeway Bumpers 8 Lau Rangers 6. In Group two Cup quarter finals at Kone Tigers Erima Wanderers 4 Asu Amitti 0, Dust Turf 12 H6 Knights 6, Badili Warako 5 Rainbow Back Page 0. The Bowls for Group one 9 Mile Faris and Country Cowboys forfeited Swans and Mul Sua United to qualify for the semi finals. NCD Suburban Sports Association Aki said the semi final, preliminary, grand finals will be played on Christmas and Boxing Day. He said the semi final will be played at Kone Tigers and Hohola while the preliminary final and grand final staged at Kone Tigers only. THIRTY-TWO teams have nominated to challenge for the National Capital District Governor’s Christmas Cup on December 19-25.
NCD Suburban Sports Association chairman Billy Aki said 24 teams have paid the K400 affiliation fee with the rest yet to meet the full requirements of participation. Governor Powes Parkop has indicated his usual support but has yet to commit a figure which will be announced when it becomes available. Teams: Havara Brothers, HG Knights, 9-Mile Giants, Erima Wanderers, GSK Eagles, Kaugere Pythons, Badili Warako, Junction Dogs, Country Cowboys, Mile Greens, 8 Mile Reds, Toks Mix Dogs, Boera Buria Reds, Lau Rangers, 5-Mile Konas, Dust Turf, Toks Eagles, Mul Sua United, 6-Mile Tigers, NCD Suburban Ducks and Asu Amitti, Freeway Bumpers. He said defending champions Morata Swans, Bullets, NCD Eastern Highlands 1/2, Hohola 1/2, 9-Mile 1/2 and Boroko have until next Tuesday’s meeting at the Kone Tigers oval at 9.30am to fulfill the requirements. The 32 teams will be divided into eight pools of four teams each. The top 16 teams will qualify for the Cup while the bottom 16 for the bowl contest. Aki said more teams had indicated interest but were rejected due to the unavailability of facilities at Kone Tigers and Hohola. The Tuesday meeting is to update the teams on the by-laws and the rules of the tournament, Aki said. He said the Governors Cup will also be used to select the Morata, NCD Suburban, Hohola and 8-Mile teams to participate in the Coca-Cola Ipatas Cup in the Southern region tournament in Port Moresby. A 30-man training squad will also be selected for the NCD franchise in anticipation for the 2014 Digicel Cup if their bid is successful. The competition is sponsored by the governor’s office to the tune of K50,000. The National TEAMS allowing drawn opposition easy points on forfeit face fines in the Simon Sia Cup off-season rugby league competition in Goroka, Eastern Highlands province.
Their future participation could also be compromised, games manager, Benji Filele has warned. “We are gravely concerned over teams not taking field to play, we take note of them and they will be penalized in paying fines. “These teams will not be allowed to come in next year,” he said. Filele said despite these, players have displayed high levels of skills in every game in the competition. After round 11, the top eight on the points ladder in their pools are; Pool A, EHSB One 18, Daulo Reds 17,UoG Nokondis 16, K92 Blacks 15, Bena Siviris 15,Yondu Watabung Blues 15,Payako Jets 14, JS Noktis 14. In Pool B, Minamalo East 19, 52 Oxford18,GDH Brumbies, Noikopa Owls, ANZ JD Bena United and TVETS on 15 points each share the fifth spots, Titans 14 and LufaKuimers 14. According to Filele round 12 kicked off on Saturday with a final format to be announced yesterday MORATA Off-season Rugby League has announced its two teams to take part in the National Capital District Governor’s Cup during Christmas weekend.
Morata Off-season Rugby League president Yanga Harupa said the teams are defending champions Morata Swans and Morata Bullets. The Swans will be out to defend the title for the fourth consecutive year after retaining it from Bomana Bullets at Ipi Park, Hohola, in 2009. The National GEREHU’S Lagaip Brothers handed home side JP Isapea a one-sided 24-4 hiding in the Hohola off-season rugby league competition at Ipi Park at the weekend.
The visitors dented the Isapea’s unbeaten record in a game where they were unable to contain the opposition’s fire power from the kick off. The Gerehu side, dressed in their new uniforms donated to them by United English club Whitehaven in a deal brokered by its PNG player Jessie Joe Nandye, were just ruthless in both defence and attack. Nandye is set to re-join Whitehaven together with Kumul team-mate and new signing Larsen Marabe in the next year. Brothers, powered by Wallen brothers Nelson and Dickson, who played for the Digicel Cup Gulf Isapea this year, were just too good walking away with the competition points. Gavu said from this series players would be trailled for the new National Capital District franchise. The National JIWAKA Governor Dr William Tongamp siad he was keen on helping local leagues in the new province.
On December 1, Tongamp launched the Anglimp Ku league at Anglimp station in Jiwaka. Tongamp committed K50,000 to the league. The provincial government will give the six leagues in Jiwaka a total of K200,000. The leagues are Nondugl, Baining, Kurumul, Banz, Minz and Anglimp.
