SELECTORS from the Highlands Confederate have named rugby league teams they believe will be competitive at next week’s National Championships in Lae.
Confederate Director Joe Tokam, speaking on behalf the squad is not taking the other teams from the Southern, New Guinea Islands and Northern lightly but believe the Highlands will give the championships its best shot. The teams, for men and women have been named after the trials last weekend while the schoolboys for Under 18 will be selected following the trials in Banz on Saturday. Tokam said Goroka, Simbu, Mt Hagen, Wabag and Jiwaka would be represented at the one-day tournament to be coordinated by Development Officer Gabriel Kiluwa. The U16 side has already been identified with players ready to travel to Lae for the National Championships. The senior men and women’s teams were selected last weekend following a three-day trial at the Rebiamul League Ground in Mt Hagen. Men’s teams which contested the trials included Goroka, Nondugl, Kerowil, Kondol, Banz, Kimil, Minj, Kurumul, Bainin Kudjip, Kambiya, Mt.Hagen,Pangia, Mendi, Wage Kandep, Porgera and Maip Nete. The women’s competition involved Goroka School Girls, Goroka Open Women, Kundiawa, Banz, Mt.Hagen and Mendi. Mendi eventually won the men’s title when they defeated Mt Hagen Doa in the grand final 10-8 to leave the home side with the runners-up tag. Kimil finished third and Porgera Nugget fourth. For the women Mt Hagen proved too good for a courageous Goroka School Girls side 12-4 in the grand final, edging the Goroka Women for the runners-up position while Banz Besta took fourth spot. Individual awards were presented for players who stood out during the trials. The Best Attacking backs award went to Sioni Mokom who starred at outside centre of Mendi in the men’s division. Best attacking back for the women was Cathene Anjo, also outside centre for the Mt. Hagen Eagles. Best defence for men was Kimil’s Andrew Gene who created a lot of havoc for his opposing players in the front row position. Melta Johns of Goroka Schoolgirls showed a lot of maturity and skill to take out the Best Defenders award for women while Mt Hagen Doa second rower Ramson Wako took the award for men. Best attacking forward for women was Lennish Torepa, prop for Mt.Hagen Eagles. Top points scorer was Mt.Hagen Eagles ladies was Mala Mark who displayed great strength and speed throughout the trials. Top points scorer in the men’s was Ali Kiku of Mt.Hagen Doa, who played on the left wing, is small in stature but strong and fast. The Best team player for the ladies was presented to five-eighth for Mt.Hagen Eagles, Slyder Dorum. Hagen Doa’s,Gerry James at halfback took out the trophy for the best player. Mendi men’s team five-eighth Sakino Gansamun was rewarded for his outstanding skills throughout the tournament while the outstanding fullback for women was Sakino Gansamun of Hagen Eagles.
