The PNG Kumuls went doing fighting, to the Australian Kangaroos in the Prime Minister‘s XIII match, 34-16 at the Kalabond today.
A late spirited fight back by the Kumuls, led by rugged ball runner Gary Lo and sizzling centre Thompson Tehteh brought the house down as the crowd screamed on in what was one of the toughest matches so far.
The Kangaroos raced of to a fine start, leading 16-nil at half time.
They returned to piled on more points with Aaron Woods crossing over for his second try after a break by half back Ben Hunt. Robbie Farah showed his trademark run, slicing through the Kumul defence to send Anthony Milford over for his first try in Kangaroo colours. Hunt converted both tries to hand the Kangaroos a comanding 28-nil lead.
Beau Scott joined the scoring names after dashing over for a try and fullback Matt Moylan made no mistake with the boot as the Kangaroos looked set for a major upset.
But an inspiring Tehteh intercepted a pass leaving the Kangaroos stunned in the Kumuls 40 metres area to race away for the home side‘s first try.
The crowd yelled and danced as winger Adex Wera smashed his way for the Kumuls second try. Noel Zeming converted both tries to trail 34-12.
The Kumuls stepped up in defence and kept the Kangaroos at bay as the time wore on.
Tehteh struck again out wide with less than two minutes on the clock.
Zeming failed to raise the flags.
