THE sacking of Adrian Lam as Kumuls coach is part of a PNG Rugby Football League restructure programme, chairman Sandis Tsaka said.
And he says the appointment of Mal Meninga as the new Kumuls coach is part of a four-year plan to improve the standard of the game in the country. The National had reported on Tuesday the sacking of Lam and appointment of Meninga. “The key difference between the old Team Kumul and the new Team Kumul structure is that the old structure was directed at preparing the Kumuls for the World Cup only,” Tsaka said. “The new Team Kumul structure is a whole of rugby league programme to improve the standard of the game. “All technical officials and management engaged and employed under the old Team Kumulsprogramme have had their contracts terminated by the PNGRFL Board. This also includes the termination of Adrian Lam as coach.” Tsaka said the Team Kumulprogramme was an innovative initiative of the PNGRFL in partnership with the Government and funded through the sponsorship of several major corporate sponsors. It includes the introduction of elite development programmes and high performance initiatives. “The new PNGRFL leadership is determined to improve the standard of the game in PNG so that PNG can competitive with the top rugby league playing nations in the world,” he said. He said Meningawould be in charge of the new Team Kumulprogrammes for the next three years. “The PNGRFL and PNG are very happy that Meninga has committed to the PNGRFL and the Team Kumulprogramme over the next few years as he is one of the best rugby league coaches in the world,” he said. The PNGRFL Board has also tasked Meninga to prepare a comprehensive structure, programme and budget incorporating priority areas and submit this to the board for its deliberation by the end of January. He said the new Team Kumulprogrammewould focus on developing many country-wide rugby league programmes including school boys competitions and enhancing regional development programmes. The programme will deliver a comprehensive rugby league program for the Under-12 to Under-18 competition, Under-20s and all affiliate leagues, Digicel Cup, Queensland Cup and the International Program including the Kumuls.
