SEVEN World Cup players have ruled themselves out of the Papua New Guinea team taking part in the 2014 Intrust Super Q-Cup competition in Australia.
The players are Larsen Marape, Charlie Wabo, Richard Kambo, Jesse Joe Nandye, Josiah Abavu, Ase Boas and Dion Aiye. The eighth player is Lae Tigers player Ate Bine Wabo. A disappointed coach Michael Marum yesterday confirmed the players have not been dropped but have withdrawn from the 52-man squad. All players named turned up for pre-season training at Bomana minus the eight players. “It is disappointing not to have the experience of those World Cup players as they would have made the job easier in preparing the team,” Marum said. “They all have varying reasons from family to work commitments which one or two came late to explain and some didn’t come at all,” Marum added. “Ase (Boas) informed the management that he has work commitments and is not able to make the time.” Marum said he did not know whether the players have other club commitment’s but indicated that England-bound super league players Enoch Maki, Francis Paniu (Hull) and Mark Mexico (Bradford Bulls) have shown up and are training intensively to prepare themselves. “If they don’t go then at least they are in training and they will be available for us,” he added. “Wellington (Albert) has returned from his interview with the Penrith Panthers and is also in camp awaiting to formalise his signing,” Marum said. The former Agmark Gurias coach said there will not be any additions made. “We will stick with the current 44 players in camp and work with what we have,” he added. “By next week after testing we will trim the squad down to 30 and have them for another week before sending them home for the Christmas break,” he added. Marum said the players will be given programmes to follow during the break and return in January to prepare for at least two trial matches in early February. “We will then finalise the final 25 players with five as shadow,” he explained. The trial matches, one likely to be with the Northern Pride will be confirmed at a later date by the PNGRFL. Marum is being assisted by Shane Morris, Jason Tassell, Solomon Kulinasi and Andrew Stone. The National Comments are closed.
