THE Mendi Black and Mendi White were named following a long weekend of league festival which culminated into an epic grand final last weekend.
Favourites Mendi One proved a class better than Magarima and took out the top prize of K10,000 and the CIVPAC Cup while Magarima settled for K5,000 and the runners-up trophy. Third place prize of K2,000 went to Erave with Kutubu taking the fourth prize. The Mathias Kombra shield and a K1,000 cash prize, sponsored by Kemele construction principal Firman Joseph, was awarded to Gobe Flames fullback Junior Rau while the man-of-the-match award went to Samuel Samson of Mendi One. Mendi Muruks Chairman Issac Joesph gave credit to CIVPAC for sponsoring the tournament. Joseph said this will be a true Southern Highlands team and challenged the current Muruks players that their positions would be an open contest. He also thanked Minister for Works and Implementation and Member for Immbongu, Francis Awesa for his support and also extended his appreciation to Southern Highlands Governor William Powi for his K500,000 commitment to the league-playing districts in the province. Joseph stressed that it was a challenge to all SHP elites to put their hands together for sports such as rugby league as it was a driving force to unite and restore the pride and passion of the Mendi Muruks after a 12-year exile when they were based in Lae. The Muruks only re-located to the province last year. Meanwhile, CIVPAC Cup coordinator Peter Alkend thanked all participating districts and the Mendi Muruks board for the first-time initiative. The Mendi black and white team will go head-to-head from January 17-19 for the final selections into the 2014 Mendi Muruks squad.
