Carrying the brand name of their major sponsors, the PNG team to the Q-Cup will be called ‘the SP Hunters.’
PNG Rugby Football League Chairman Sandis Tsaka also announced at the club naming launch that the SP Hunters will be flying the Papua New Guinean colors.
“The jersey will be similar to the Kumuls’ jersey accept we will be giving prominence to the color red unlike the Kumuls’ jersey that has mostly yellow,” said Tsaka.
Mr Tsaka explained at the meet that the team name, ‘Hunters’ was chosen by way of being the most popular suggested name.
He said that a month long competition that was launched last month (November) requesting suggestions for a name for the team, had seen many plausible entries. However, as there was room for only one name, it was decided that Hunters would be the ideal name.
Sports Minister Justin Tkatchenko who was also at the naming launch said that he felt SP Hunters was a suitable name as it embodied all that makes PNG great.
“Hunters are disciplined, patient, hard working and lethal.
“Traits that we want our boys to bring to the Q-Cup,” said Minister Tkatchenko.
SP Brewery who were given the naming rights for their sponsorship of K1.5 million to the club annually for the next three years was represented by General Manager Stan Joyce who told all in attendance that the brewer was happy to come on board and help the code in this new pathway to rugby league success.
